SUMMARY:International Competition “Ecoview”
DESCRIPTION:The Laboratory of GIS and Remote Sensing of the National Centre “Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine\,” a member of the Copernicus Academy\, is organising the international competition “Ecoview” for students aged 14 to 18 years. \nBy participating in the competition\, students will learn to create a science project using publicly available remote sensing data. We believe that satellite imagery is a powerful tool for environmental science and climate education. Using accessible data\, students can explore how the climate crisis affects the environment and how it has impacted their home regions over time. \nThe competition will be held online\, and participation is free of charge. The working language of the event is English. The main requirement for participation is to use remote sensing data in the research project. \nThe competition will take place from 20 May to 4 December 2026 and will include three stages: \nStage 1 (20 May – 31 October 2026): Registration and Project Preparation\nParticipants will complete a registration form and develop a scientific project on an environmental topic of their choice. They are free to select the issue\, geographic location\, research scale\, materials\, and tools according to their interests. The project must use satellite data. \nStage 2 (1–20 November 2026): Project Evaluation\nThe jury will evaluate the submitted projects and select the finalists. \nStage 3 (4 December 2026): Final Presentations\nFinalists will present their projects online via Zoom. Following the presentations\, the jury will announce the winners. \n\n\nIf you want to participate in the Competition\, please complete the registration form. The deadline is the 31st of October. More information about the terms and conditions can be found on the JASU website and in the Participant’s Guide\, which provides useful information for participants. SUMMARY:ITGRF Workshop 2026
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 ITGRF workshop will provide an excellent opportunity to advance the International Terrestrial Gravity Reference Frame and to discuss current activities within the IAG Joint Working Group 2.1.1. The workshop will focus on ensuring the compatibility of absolute gravity observations\, establishing and maintaining gravity reference stations\, and developing a modern\, user-oriented infrastructure for end-users. It will bring together experts in absolute gravimetry\, gravity monitoring\, and reference frame realization to exchange knowledge and coordinate future work. \nThe International Terrestrial Gravity Reference Frame (ITGRF) is developed by the International Association of Geodesy and is based on accurate observations from absolute gravimeters and continuous gravity monitoring at reference stations. Its primary objective is to replace the obsolete International Gravity Reference Standardization Network (IGSN71) defined in the early 1970s with a modern\, consistent global gravity reference. \nThe workshop will be hosted in 2026 by the British Geological Survey’s Space Geodesy Facility at Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex\, a site with a strong scientific heritage as the former home of the Royal Greenwich Observatory. \n\nBooking/registration information is available under: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-iag-jwg-211-workshop-for-the-development-of-the-itgrf-tickets-1986065996860\nThe Session plan is available here: https://share.bkg.bund.de/x/HoCpBw\nMore info here [PDF]

SUMMARY:Talks on GIA Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Alexandre Couhert and Maxime Rousselet\, both at Centre national d’études spatiales (CNES)\, Toulouse\, France \nwill present \nPart I (Alexandre):\nSatellite altimetry sea level rise estimates and ocean mass trends derived from satellite gravimetry both rely on solid Earth/pole tides and GIA models\, to remove these signals from GRACE/-FO and altimeter based sea surface height observations\, and access to the secular variations in these global-scale mass transfers. In 2015\, a concern was raised concerning the consistency of the recommended modeling approach in the International Earth Rotation Service (IERS) Conventions and updates were proposed since then to accommodate this issue. Nowadays\, with hindsight\, additional inconsistencies may arise when combining these different geophysical models. \nPart II (Maxime):\nSolid Earth models are crucial for interpreting space-geodetic observations\, yet mantle rheology remains inconsistently treated across time-scales. A self-consistent framework must capture elastic\, transient\, and viscous deformation. In particular\, the transient rheology below the asthenosphere\, acting in the interannual to centennial band\, remains poorly constrained. Previous studies estimated tidal-band attenuation from a-posteriori gravity fields\, losing the covariance information contained in the observations. Incorporating rheology directly into orbit determination overcomes this limitation. What is the amplitude of the mantle’s transient response below the asthenosphere?\nWe address this by combining consistent orbit and rheology modeling with independent geophysical constraints. Analytical orbital perturbation theories describe satellite responses to anelastic pole tide and long-period zonal solid Earth tides\, showing why these signals should be analyzed jointly. We use this framework to estimate Extended Burgers parameters\, supported by a comprehensive error budget covering constellation design\, formal uncertainties\, other rheological parameters\, and residual gravity-field errors.\nWe further assess implications for climate-related quantities derived from space geodesy. For GRACE/-FO estimates of barystatic sea-level change\, rheological treatment can introduce a systematic trend bias exceeding 10%. This highlights the importance of transient mantle deformation for interpreting long-term satellite records and motivates a consistent solid Earth framework across time-scales for both mantle characterization and climate monitoring.

SUMMARY:Workshop on atomic clocks for satellite gravimetry
DESCRIPTION:Dear colleagues\, \nWe would like to invite you to the workshop on “Miniature Orbiting oPtical Atomic Clock (MOPAC)”\, taking place on 11 November 2026 at ETH Zurich\, with an online participation option. \nRecent advances in integrated photonics make it realistic to consider small optical atomic clocks as a payload for satellite gravimetry\, exploiting the gravitational red-shift as a measurement quantity. This workshop aims to bring the atomic clock and satellite gravimetry communities together and to discuss the mid- and long-term perspectives of this measurement concept – both the technological challenges and the scientific applications. \nThe format is discussion-oriented: keynote talks in the first half\, structured breakout discussions in the second. Critical perspectives are explicitly welcome. \nWhen? November 11\, 2026\, 13:00-17:00 CET\nWhere? ETH Zurich\, Switzerland. A hybrid option will be offered.\nWho? We invite experts in the fields of geodesy\, satellite gravimetry and atomic clocks. \nRegistration: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdaJzbfF4ETjIKcgj2IkQYv9SiJ_VW74CtT4B_ONyB1AJGI1w/viewform\nFree of charge\, please register by 4 November 2026. In case you cannot attend but would like to receive updates from us about this topic and future developments\, please fill out the registration form accordingly. \nKeynote speakers: \n\nJürgen Müller (Leibniz University Hannover)\nMoritz Dähmlow (ZARM\, University of Bremen)\nJonathan Home (ETH Zurich)\nPiet O. Schmidt (PTB Braunschweig / Leibniz University Hannover)\nFabien Droz (Rolex Quantum SA)\n\nMOPAC is a joint initiative of ETH Zurich and the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI)\, working towards a demonstrator mission with a small SWaP-C optical atomic clock as its main payload. \nThe full invitation is attached and available here: https://polybox.ethz.ch/index.php/s/nS5fnAcD2BLF6y5.
