Call for Abstracts: GGOS Sessions at EGU27 and IUGG 2027
Abstract submission is officially open for two major upcoming geoscience assemblies in 2027 featuring dedicated GGOS sessions: the EGU General Assembly 2027 in Vienna, Austria, and the 29th IUGG General Assembly 2027 in Incheon, Republic of Korea.
The Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) serves as the central coordinating body integrating geodetic observations, reference frames, and models to observe the dynamic Earth system. Researchers, data providers, observers, and young scientists are warmly invited to submit their latest research and technological innovations to the dedicated GGOS and inter-association symposia highlighted below.
1. EGU General Assembly 2027 (EGU27)
The EGU General Assembly 2027 will bring together geoscientists from all over the world in Vienna, Austria, and online from 4–9 April 2027. GGOS invites submissions to its flagship session within the Geodesy (G) Division:
- Conference Dates: 4–9 April 2027 (Vienna, Austria & Online)
- General Information & Updates: EGU27 November Updates | EGU27 Official Website
- Abstract Submission Deadline: 12 January 2027, 13:00 CET
Session G2.3: GGOS and Essential Geodetic Variables for Earth System Monitoring
Direct Link & Submission: https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU27/session/61998
Convener: José M. Ferrándiz (Spain)
Co-conveners: Helmut Klima (Austria), Claudia C. Carabajal (USA), Alexander Kehm (Germany, ECS), Mariana Moreira (Portugal, ECS)
Session Description:
GGOS collaborates with IAG components and international partners to deliver precise, consistent, and long-term observations of Earth’s geometry, rotation, and gravity field. In alignment with established frameworks in climate and ocean sciences, GGOS has introduced the Essential Geodetic Variables (EGVs) framework. This framework identifies and characterizes key geodetic observations and products fundamental to monitoring Earth system changes and supporting broad scientific and societal applications on Earth and in space.
Advancing EGVs requires their systematic definition, availability and performance assessments, sustainable observing infrastructure, dependable supply chains, and open access according to FAIR principles. This session welcomes contributions across the entire EGV value chain—from variable definitions and user requirements to observation techniques, processing pipelines, quality metrics, and operational dissemination.
2. IUGG General Assembly 2027 (IUGG 2027)
The 29th General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) will take place at the Songdo Convensia in Incheon, Republic of Korea, from 11–22 July 2027. GGOS convenes its main association symposium alongside high-impact inter-association symposia addressing GGOS Focus Areas:
- Conference Dates: 11–22 July 2027 (Songdo Convensia, Incheon, Republic of Korea)
- Official Website: https://iugg2027korea.org/
- Abstract Submission Portal & Guidelines: IUGG 2027 Abstract Guidelines
- Symposia Overview: Program at a Glance | Association Symposia | Inter-Association Symposia
- Abstract Submission & Travel Grant Deadline: 14 February 2027, 23:59 HST (UTC-10)
Main GGOS Symposium G07: GGOS: Advances in Geodetic Infrastructure and Methods for Earth System Monitoring
Lead Convener: Laura Sánchez (Germany)
Conveners: Anna Riddell (Australia), Detlef Angermann (Germany), José Rodríguez (Spain), Aletha de Witt (South Africa), Martin Sehnal (Austria)
Description & Welcomed Topics:
GGOS provides the umbrella for continuous, reliable Earth system monitoring by scientifically integrating observations of Earth geometry, gravity, and rotation with numerical and geophysical models. Contributions addressing the following core topics are warmly invited:
- Advances in geodetic infrastructure at global and regional scales, including development, co-location, and integration of ground- and space-based observing techniques;
- Standards, processing, combination, and interpretation of geodetic observations and parameters, emphasizing consistency, interoperability, and traceability;
- New and improved geodetic products and services, including development and implementation of Essential Geodetic Variables (EGVs) answering scientific and societal needs;
- Contributions of geodesy to Earth system monitoring, including climate, ocean, and environmental observing systems.
GGOS related Symposia:
- Symposium G06: Atmosphere and Space Weather (IAG)
- Symposium JA04: The Space Weather Data Pipeline: From Observation to FAIR Production and Dissemination (IAG, IAGA, IAMAS, IAVCEI)
- Symposium JA05: Machine Learning, Data Assimilation, and Predictability for Earth System and Geospace Models (IACS, IAG, IAGA, IAMAS)
- Symposium JS02: Early Warning Systems – Mitigation of Extreme Events (IAG, IAHS, IAMAS, IASPEI, IAVCEI)
- Symposium JA02: Education and Outreach in Geosciences (IACS, IAG, IAGA, IAHS, IAMAS, IAPSO, IASPEI, IAVCEI)
