GTEWS – GNSS enhancement for Tsunami Early Warning Systems
Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology plays a critical role in enhancing tsunami early warning systems (GTEWS) by providing rapid, accurate measurements of Earth’s surface deformation and ionospheric disturbances following large earthquakes. The potential of GNSS for tsunami detection was highlighted after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which claimed over 230,000 lives and exposed the lack of a warning system in the region.
