FICN – Free Inner Core Nutation

Free Inner Core Nutation (FICN) is a theoretical oscillation of Earth’s rotation linked to differential motion between the solid inner core and the surrounding outer core and mantle. It produces an extremely small and difficult-to-detect wobble in Earth’s rotation axis. Studying FICN helps scientists better understand Earth’s deep interior structure and its dynamic behavior.
