Geodetic Observatory

A geodetic observatory is a dedicated facility where multiple geodetic measurement techniques are co-located and operated to observe fundamental parameters of the Earth system. These techniques typically include GNSS, VLBI, Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR), DORIS, gravimetry, and tide gauges. In geodesy, geodetic observatories are essential for the realization and maintenance of global reference frames (terrestrial and celestial), the monitoring of Earth rotation, gravity field variations, sea level change, and crustal deformation. Co-location of techniques at a single site enables precise inter-technique ties, improving the consistency and long-term stability of geodetic products.
