GSI – Geospatial Information Authority of Japan

The  GSIGeospatial Information Authority of Japan is the national mapping and geodetic agency of Japan. It is responsible for maintaining the national geodetic reference frame and infrastructure, coordinate and height systems, topographic maps, and geospatial data infrastructure. GSI operates a dense nationwide GNSS CORS network (GEONET) and conducts VLBI, gravity, leveling, Tidal Gauge, InSAR, and monitoring of crustal dynamics.

In geodesy, the GSI plays a crucial role in monitoring crustal deformation caused by tectonic plate motion, earthquakes, and volcanic activity in one of the most geophysically active regions of the world. It contributes to regional and global geodetic reference frames and supports disaster risk reduction and Earth system monitoring through high-precision geodetic observations.
