UPDATE: The abstract book is now available: here.

The first workshop of the Inter-Commission Committee on Geodesy for Climate Research (ICCC) of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) will take place on

March 29-31, 2021

as an online event.

The growing data record from numerous geodetic observation techniques (GNSS station observations, satellite radio occultation and reflectometry, satellite gravimetry, satellite altimetry, InSAR, VLBI, GNSS controlled tide gauges, etc) provides a new quantitative view on various variables that are relevant for climate research, such as tropospheric water vapor, thermospheric neutral density, terrestrial water storage, ice sheet and glacier mass, sea level, sea surface winds, ocean waves, subsurface and surface currents, and sea ice extent and thickness. Geodetic observables are often compared with geophysical models, which helps to explain observations, and may potentially be used to evaluate and improve simulations through techniques such as data assimilation.

This workshop intends to:

  • 1) Highlight the potential of geodesy for climate research by showcasing and discussing climate-related studies making use of geodetic observations.
  • 2) Bring together geodetic and climate communities to facilitate exchange of their experience and possibly establish a mutual cooperation.

We welcome presentations on all aspects related to using geodesy for climate research.

The ICCC is organized in eight Joint Working Groups (JWG), so it is possible (but not necesary) to assign abstracts to one of the following JWG topics:

  • Climate Signatures in Earth Orientation Parameters
  •  Quality control methods for climate applications of geodetic tropospheric parameters
  •  Geodesy for the Cryosphere: advancing the use of geodetic data in polar climate modelling
  • Sea level and vertical land motion
  • Understanding the monsoon phenomenon from a geodetic perspective
  •  Numerical Simulations for Recovering Climate-Related Mass Transport Signals
  •  Satellite geodetic data assimilation for climate research
  • Methodology of comparing/validating climate simulations with geodetic data
Format of the workshop:
  • We will have 2x two hours of live meeting per day, one slot from 8-10 a.m. CEST (UTC+2) and one slot from 5-7 p.m CEST (UTC+2).
  • These oral blocks will be a mix of introductory overview lectures and short (12+3 min.) scientific presentations.
  • Poster sessions will offer individual live breakout rooms on Zoom and additional chat discussions.
  • All presentations will be made available to participants before the meeting to facilitate asynchronous viewing.
  • There will be the opportunity to ask questions in live meetings and to discuss with fellow scientists via chat channels.
Schedule overview:

Keynotes will be intended to provide a broad introduction (accessible to Master and PhD students) to the different topics related to geodesy and climate and specifically to the topics of the ICCC Joint Working Groups (see above).

Registration and abstract submission:
  • Abstracts can be submitted until  February 14th, 2021 via the following link (presenting author is automatically registered for the meeting): Abstract submission (including registration)
  • If you would like to participate without presenting, please register by March 21, 2021 via the following link: Registration only
  • Abstract submission and participation in the workshop are free of charge!
  • In case of questions, please contact: Organizing committee
