ETRS89 – European Terrestrial Reference System 1989
ETRS89 (European Terrestrial Reference System 1989) is the official geodetic reference frame for Europe. It is aligned with the global ITRS (International Terrestrial Reference System) at the epoch 1989.0 but is fixed to the stable part of the Eurasian tectonic plate to avoid continental drift effects. ETRS89 ensures that all European geospatial and surveying activities use a consistent, stable coordinate system. It forms the geodetic foundation for many European mapping, navigation, and geoinformation systems such as INSPIRE and Galileo.
