Orthometric Height
Orthometric height is the distance measured along the plumb line between a point on the Earth’s surface and the geoid, which approximates mean sea level. It requires knowledge of the gravity field along the entire plumb line. Orthometric heights are commonly used in North America and many national height systems worldwide.
