The 4th workshop of the IAG Inter-Commission Committee on Geodesy for Climate Research (ICCC) of the International Association of Geodesy will be held on

February 23-25, 2027

as a hybrid event — on-site at the GFZ – Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam (Germany) and online worldwide.

We invite contributions advancing geodesy for climate research, including reference frames, sea level, gravity field, and Earth observation. 

Scientific motivation, scope, and objectives

The growing data record from numerous geodetic observation techniques (GNSS station observations, satellite radio occultation and reflectometry, satellite gravimetry, satellite altimetry, InSAR, VLBI, GNSS controlled tide gauges, etc) provides a new quantitative view on various variables that are relevant for climate research, such as tropospheric water vapor, thermospheric neutral density, terrestrial water storage, ice sheet and glacier mass, sea level, sea surface winds, ocean waves, subsurface and surface currents, and sea ice extent and thickness. Geodetic observables are often compared with geophysical models, which helps to explain observations, and may potentially be used to evaluate and improve simulations through techniques such as data assimilation.

This workshop intends to:

  1. Highlight the potential of geodesy for climate research by showcasing and discussing climate-related studies making use of geodetic observations.
  2. Bring together geodetic and climate scientists to facilitate exchange of their experience and possibly establish a mutual cooperation.

Workshop format and schedule

  • The workshop will run in a hybrid format: on-site at GFZ (Potsdam, Germany) with live-streaming and interactive participation for remote attendees.
  • Session types
    • Oral presentations: ~10 minutes per talk (online and onsite) plus brief Q&A (final details to be confirmed after abstract acceptance in November). We will try to accomodate online oral presentations according to the time zone of the presenters.
    • On-site poster presentations: poster hall with scheduled discussion times and networking possibilities
    • Virtual poster presentations: remote e‑posters with dedicated live discussion slot (breakout rooms) on Wednesday (February 24th, 2027) between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. CET.
  • Asynchronous access: To support global participation, presenters will be asked to make their presentation material available to registered participants ahead of time. Session recordings will be provided where speaker consent is given.
  • The online part of the workshop will be held via Zoom. Access details for the virtual meeting will not be published on this website but emailed to all registered participants shortly before the event.

    • Registration online: free of charge!
    • Registration on-site: €190 including coffee breaks, lunches, 1x dinner.
    • As the registration fee only covers the net price for catering, we can, unfortunately, not offer any discount prices.
  • Travel support:
    • Early career participants from low and mid-economy countries can apply for an IAG Travel Award until three months before the meeting.

Code of Conduct

Welcome and Introduction

The 4th ICCC Hybrid Workshop 2027 is committed to providing a welcoming, inclusive, and harassment-free environment for all participants. We value a diversity of views and opinions and strive to create an environment that allows for the free exchange of scientific ideas and results. This Code of Conduct outlines our expectations and the steps we will take to ensure a safe and respectful experience for everyone. We will follow IUGG’s Anti-Harassment Guidelines.

Unacceptable Behaviours

Unacceptable behaviours include but are not limited to:

  • Discrimination or harassment based on age, citizenship, disability, ethnic origin, gender identity, language, political or other opinion, religion, or sexual orientation.
  • Unwelcome verbal or non-verbal behaviour that creates a hostile environment, including but not limited to:
    • Personal attacks or insults.
    • Harassing comments related to someone’s identity or appearance.
    • Unwanted physical contact or advances.
    • Disruption of talks or other activities.

Reporting Unacceptable Behaviour

If you experience or witness unacceptable behaviour, please report it immediately to:

  • A local organizer on-site (e.g., at the registration desk).
  • By emailing your concern to Organising Committee

All reports will remain confidential and will be handled with sensitivity. Please provide as much detail as possible about the incident, including the time and location.

Actions to Prevent Unacceptable Behaviour

If unacceptable behaviour is reported or observed, the local organizers will take the following actions:

  • Immediate intervention to stop the behaviour.
  • Removal from the Workshop without warning or refund, if necessary.
  • Involvement of external authorities or support services as necessary.
  • A thorough investigation, with the opportunity for the alleged offender to respond.
  • A full report of the incident should be sent to the Organising Committee, who will promptly report to the IUGG Officers any case of harassment that occurred during an IUGG-supported meeting.

This Code of Conduct will be reviewed and updated regularly to ensure it remains relevant and effective. Feedback and suggestions are welcome at any time. We expect all participants to respect this Code of Conduct and to contribute to a positive and inclusive environment. Let’s work together to make the 4th ICCC Hybrid Workshop 2027 a successful and enjoyable experience for everyone.
