News and Activities
GGOS IberAtlantic (GGOS IA) functions as a regional node of GGOS, focusing on geodetic activities across the Iberian Peninsula and the Atlantic region. GGOS IA fosters collaboration among geodetic institutions while promoting scientific research and technological development tailored to the region’s unique geophysical characteristics.

Recent Achievements and Future Perspectives in Geodesy – Scientific Colloquium
IAG, 📅 Event UpdateAt the end of 2023, Prof. Harald Schuh will retire as Director of the Geodesy Department at the GFZ. For this reason, the GFZ has decided to organize and host a scientific colloquium on “Recent Achievements and Future Perspectives in Geodesy” to which you are cordially invited.
During this colloquium, several scientific presentations will be given on various topics of geodesy. Most of the speakers are former doctoral and post-doctoral students of Harald Schuh who now hold professorships.
During the social dinner on the first evening, there will also be time for meeting your colleagues and networking with good friends.
Participation is free of charge; however, registration is mandatory by January 31, 2024.
GGOS Days 2024 & GGOS Focus Areas Topical Meeting
GGOS, 📅 Event UpdateDate: October 7 to 11, 2024 (Save the date)
Location: Potsdam, Germany
The GGOS Focus Areas aim to address broader issues that have not been considered by any component of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) or those that require the agreement of different IAG components to be solved. These Areas are cross-disciplinary and seek to identify gaps and necessary future geodetic products while also serving as incubators of new research fields.
Additionally, there are two new potential Focus Areas under discussion: combining tropospheric parameters and integrating GNSS and InSAR data.
Considering the widespread interest in these topics, and with gratitude to the GFZ (German Research Centre for Geosciences) for the invitation, we are arranging a GGOS Focus Areas Topical Meeting to unite all colleagues invested and engaged in these fields to assess advancements, consider fresh developments, and establish innovative research strategies. Jointly with this Topical Meeting, we will host the GGOS Days 2024 to convene the other GGOS components for reporting advancements and planning future endeavours. This short announcement is to invite you to save the date: October 7 to 11, 2024. We will be providing more details on the format and participation in these meetings in the near future on the event website:
EGU 2024 Abstract Submission
GGOS, 📅 Event UpdateAbstract submission for next year’s EGU General Assembly (14-19 April 2024) is open and we invite you to submit an abstract for the GGOS session
High precision modern geodetic observations enable comprehensive monitoring of multiple spheres of the Earth. They record fingerprints of changes within the Earth System, providing crucial information to address major scientific issues, e.g., natural hazards, climate changes, global water cycles. Interpreting geodetic observations requires implementation of reference frames, analysis techniques and models with accuracy comparable to or exceeding the observations. Consequently, geodesy expanded its scope from just measuring geometry, gravity, and rotation of the Earth to understanding fingerprints recorded there and has become a key science to understand the Earth System for functioning and sustainability of our society. The Global Geodetic Observing System realizes the metrological basis for monitoring the Earth System. It is designed to unite individual geodetic observations and model them into one consistent frame with the highest precision available. We welcome contributions relevant to GGOS, particularly its scientific and social aspects, infrastructure, products, and activities of geodetic services.
