GGOS IberAtlantic (GGOS IA) functions as a regional node of GGOS, focusing on geodetic activities across the Iberian Peninsula and the Atlantic region. GGOS IA fosters collaboration among geodetic institutions while promoting scientific research and technological development tailored to the region’s unique geophysical characteristics.
Formally established in April 2024, GGOS IberAtlantic unites geodetic institutions and experts from Spain and Portugal with the following objectives:
- Strengthen regional geodetic infrastructure
- Enhance collaboration in scientific and technical geodesy
- Raise awareness of geodesy’s vital role in society
Despite its significance, geodesy often receives limited public attention. GGOS IberAtlantic addresses this by serving as a unified voice for the region, engaging both policymakers and the general public.
Complementing this effort is the RAEGE (Red Atlântica de Estações Geodinâmicas e Espaciais) project, which establishes an advanced network of geodetic and space observatories across the Azores, Canary Islands, and Iberian Peninsula. RAEGE supports geodetic and astronomical research while strengthening Europe’s global geodetic infrastructure, directly contributing to the goals of both GGOS and GGOS IA (more info).
GGOS IberAtlantic Action Plan
The GGOS IberAtlantic Action Plan defines the roadmap for achieving the initiative’s goals and advancing geodesy in the Iberian and Atlantic region. It identifies key actions, priorities, and collaborative efforts designed to strengthen regional cooperation, support scientific excellence, and promote the long-term development of geodetic capabilities and infrastructure.
