GOALS AND LINES OF WORK
The Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) works to ensure that geodesy effectively serves science, society, and decision-making worldwide. Building on broad international community input, GGOS has defined its long-term vision in the Strategic Plan 2024–2034: Geodesy for Science and Society.
The Strategic Plan establishes a holistic framework to strengthen the geodetic community and enhance the societal value of geodesy. It is structured around four core long-term goals:
- Visibility and Engagement
Raising awareness of geodesy and its critical role in understanding and managing our planet through effective communication, outreach, and collaboration. - Science–Policy Networking
Strengthening links between geodesy, policymakers, and international frameworks to ensure that geodetic information supports informed decisions for society. - Capacity Enhancement and Sustainability
Supporting a strong, inclusive, and sustainable global geodetic community by fostering expertise, infrastructure, and long-term partnerships across regions. - Comprehensive and Integrated Analysis
Promoting interdisciplinary and cross-cutting geodetic analyses that connect observations, models, and applications for greater societal benefit.
These goals guide the identification of community needs and support coordinated action across GGOS components and affiliates.
To facilitate their implementation, an accompanying Action Plan translates the strategic objectives into a set of specific, measurable activities. Each activity includes defined responsibilities, timelines, and monitoring mechanisms, ensuring effective coordination and alignment across local, regional, and global levels. Several actions are led by GGOS Affiliates, including GGOS IberAtlantic, reinforcing the contribution of regional initiatives to the broader GGOS mission.
GGOS IberAtlantic aligns its activities with the priorities established in the GGOS Strategic Plan 2024–2034. The regional Action Plan encompasses initiatives in Outreach and Awareness, Education and Capacity Building, Communication and Resources, and Scientific Support. Further information is available in the GGOS IberAtlantic Strategic Action Plan.
GGOS IberAtlantic Action Plan
The GGOS IberAtlantic Action Plan provides the roadmap for achieving the initiative’s objectives and advancing geodesy throughout the Iberian and Atlantic region. It outlines strategic priorities, key actions, and collaborative efforts aimed at strengthening regional cooperation, supporting scientific excellence, and fostering the sustainable development of geodetic infrastructure, expertise, and capabilities.
