Geodesy for Safer Societies: Join the GGOS Topical Meeting on Geohazards

The Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) invites scientists, practitioners, infrastructure operators, early-career researchers and representatives of operational agencies to participate in the GGOS Topical Meeting on Geohazards, taking place on 2 October 2026 in Gävle, Sweden.

The meeting will be hosted by Lantmäteriet, the Swedish Mapping, Cadastral and Land Registration Authority, and will be accessible both on site and online. Participation is free of charge, but registration is required.

 

From scientific research to operational services

Geodetic techniques play an increasingly important role in observing natural hazards and understanding the processes behind earthquakes, volcanic activity, tsunamis, landslides, ground deformation and other potentially damaging events.

The GGOS Topical Meeting will focus particularly on how scientific results and geodetic technologies can be transformed into reliable, long-term operational services for hazard monitoring, early warning and emergency response.

The programme consists of three focused sessions:

  • InSAR Key Applications
  • Continuous Monitoring Based on InSAR
  • Regional Initiatives Integrating GNSS and InSAR Techniques

Each session will begin with invited presentations and continue with an open discussion. Participants will examine current challenges such as the sustainable operation of monitoring networks, real-time data availability, data processing and archiving, the integration of different observation techniques, and the usability of geodetic information within emergency-response systems.

The meeting provides an opportunity to connect researchers with representatives of observing networks, operational programmes and regional initiatives, and to identify areas in which GGOS can help coordinate future activities.

All colleagues working on geohazards, GNSS, InSAR, deformation monitoring, early-warning systems and related topics, or just interested people, are encouraged to participate.

Participants wishing to attend in person must register by 6 September 2026. Registration for online participation will remain possible after this date.

Two full weeks of geodynamics and geodesy in Gävle

The Topical Meeting forms part of a broader sequence of geodetic events taking place in Gävle.

TIGER Symposium – Tracking and Investigating Geodynamics and Earth Rotation

Immediately beforehand, IAG Commission 3 will organise the TIGER Symposium, from 28 September to 1 October 2026. Its programme includes sessions on cryospheric deformation, volcanogeodesy and seismogeodesy. Participants registered for the GGOS Topical Meeting may also attend the volcanogeodesy and seismogeodesy sessions of the TIGER Symposium on 1 October free of charge. Participation in the complete TIGER Symposium requires separate registration.

GGOS Days 2026

Following the Topical Meeting, the community will gather for GGOS Days 2026, taking place from 5 to 7 October 2026 at the same venue. GGOS Days will address global geodetic infrastructure, observations, products, services, emerging technologies and the strategic development of GGOS.
