News and Activities

GGOS IberAtlantic (GGOS IA) functions as a regional node of GGOS, focusing on geodetic activities across the Iberian Peninsula and the Atlantic region. GGOS IA fosters collaboration among geodetic institutions while promoting scientific research and technological development tailored to the region’s unique geophysical characteristics.

Abstract Submission Deadlines – EGU and IUGG conferences

GGOS, 📅 Event Update

In the first half of next year two main conferences will be held. The EGU General Assembly on 23-28 April 2023, and the IUGG General Assembly on 11-20 July 2023. Deadline Extension – Nominations of next GGOS President

GGOS, 🏛️ Organisation News
GGOS President Man Woman Icon Logo

The elections of GGOS President for the period 2023-2027 shall take place before the 2023 IAG General Assembly in Berlin, Germany. As given in section 15 (d) of the IAG By-Laws, “The GGOS President is elected by the IAG Executive Committee from a slate of nominations submitted by the GGOS Coordinating Board in consultation with the Executive Committee. The President is appointed for one period, which may be renewed once”. The Nominating Committee is inviting you to submit nominations for the GGOS President.

The deadline to submit nominations was extended to January 17, 2023.

The GGOS President is the principal spokesperson and representative of GGOS to the IAG and outside organizations, and presides over meetings of GGOS: GGOS Days Conference (annually), the Coordinating Board Meeting (1-2 times a year, usually during EGU and AGU), and Executive Committee
Telecon (once a month).

Based on the nominations received, the Nomination Committee will prepare a list of candidates to be filled (normally two candidates) and will send it to the IAG Office. The result of the elections will be announced by June 2023.

For any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact either me, or any of the other members of the Nominating Committee listed at the top of this letter.

I am looking forward to receiving your nominations and I thank you in advance for your prompt attention to this matter.

Yours truly,

Basara Miyahara

Chair of the GGOS Nominating Committee

GGOS Days 2022 & Strategic Plan Workshop

GGOS, 📅 Event Update
GGOS Days 2022 Munich

GGOS organized the annual GGOS Days this year at November 14-15, 2022 in Munich (Germany) as a hybrid meeting at the Bavarian Academy of Science and Humanities (BAdW) in the Residenz. In total 111 interested people participated in this conference. 33 of them in-person and 78 virtually. The GGOS Days 2022 meeting was locally organized by the DGK (German Geodetic Commission), the BAdW (Bavarian Academy of Science and Humanities) and the TUM (Technical University of Munich).

The conference started with an Opening Session with presentations on DGK, IAG and GGOS. It was followed by the Keynote Speaker Session with presentations covering novel geodetic technologies and procedures as well as contributions of geodesy to climate change processes. In addition, all GGOS components reported on their recent activities and presented their plans for the coming year. It includes the two GGOS Bureaus, the three GGOS Focus Areas, the two GGOS Affiliates, the GGOS Science Panel, the GGOS Coordinating Office as well as the GGOS Committees and the GGOS Working Groups. The GGOS Days also provided space for fruitful discussions. All in all, this conference was very successful.

Directly after the GGOS Days 2022 the GGOS Strategic Plan Workshop was convened at the same venue on November 16-17, 2022. Key people within GGOS and IAG discussed together with invited IAG Service representatives the future direction and goals of GGOS. The discussion was based on the results of a community survey to develop a new strategy of GGOS.

You can find the conference minutes, all presentation slides, a photo gallery, the GGOS status reports and the recorded conference at the GGOS Days 2022 website: https://geodesy.science/event/ggos-days-2022/
