IRP

The IERS Reference Pole (IRP) is a conventional reference point defined by the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service to represent Earth’s mean rotation axis. It provides a stable basis for monitoring polar motion and supporting precise geodetic and Earth orientation measurements.

The Instantaneous Rotation Pole (IRP) is the current, real-time position of Earth’s rotation axis on its surface. Tracking the IRP allows scientists to study short-term variations in Earth’s rotation and polar motion for precise geodesy and navigation.
