IDS – International DORIS Service

IDS iag service DORIS
Go To Service

Development

Since 1994, DORIS is one of the four techniques used by the International Earth rotation and Reference systems Service (IERS). In 1999, a DORIS Pilot Experiment was created to validate the proof-of-concept of a future IAG Service related to this technique. In 2003, an International DORIS Service (IDS) was created. This scientific service is recognized by the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) and based on international cooperation.

Mission / Objectives

The International DORIS Service is committed to providing the highest quality data and products related to the DORIS techniques in view of geodetic and geophysical research activities, in particular supporting precise orbit determination for altimeter mission satellites.

Products

The current products of the International DORIS Service are the following :

  • time series of geodetic coordinates for DORIS tracking stations
  • position and velocity of DORIS tracking stations
  • time series geocenter motion
  • time series of Earth Orientation Parameters
  • See also http://ids-doris.org/network/ids-station-series.html

Network of Tracking Stations

The DORIS network includes about sixty tracking stations well distributed all over the world. It is based on international scientific cooperation. A virtual tour of the DORIS network using GoogleEarth can be accessed through https://ids-doris.org/network-stations/network-on-google-earth.html.

More technical information about the DORIS stations can be found at https://ids-doris.org/network-stations/sites.html

Data Centers

Data and products of the International DORIS Service can be accessed at the following two Data Centers : NASA/CDDIS in the USA and IGN in France.

https://ids-doris.org/data-products/information-data-center-organization.html

Analysis Centers

The Analysis Centers of the IDS process the DORIS data available at the IDS Data Centers and generate products (station coordinates, precise satellite orbits, etc.). Their results are then accessible at the IDS Data Center.

See also https://ids-doris.org/ids/organization/analysis-centers.html

Analysis Center Coordinator

The Analysis Center Coordinator assists the Analysis Center. With the help of the Combination Center, he provides a unique IDS solution for each product, based on individual Analysis Center solutions.

See also https://ids-doris.org/ids/organization/analysis-coordination.html

Combination Center

The IDS Combination Center provides regular combination of products of the IDS Analysis Centers such as weekly time series of DORIS station coordinates under the supervision of the IDS Analysis Coordinator. The IDS Combination Center is also in charge of the realization of the so-called DPOD (DORIS extension to the current ITRF for Precise Orbit Determination) which contains update mean positions and velocities of all the DORIS stations since 1993.0. Last but not least, the IDS Combination Center produces the IDS contribution the ITRF.

See: https://ids-doris.org/user-corner/combination/activity-products.html

Central Bureau

The Central Bureau is the executive arm of the IDS Governing Board, responsible for the general management, coordination and day-to-day operations of the IDS.

See also https://ids-doris.org/ids/organization/central-bureau.html

Governing Board

The Governing Board of the IDS set up general policy and exercize a broad oversight of the IDS functions. Members are elected or appointed for a four-year period according to the IDS Terms of References.

See also https://ids-doris.org/ids/organization/governing-board.html

Publications and Meetings

The IDS Central Bureau maintains a comprehensive Web site as the primary vehicle for the distribution of information within the DORIS community. This site can be accessed at http://ids-doris.org/. Many technical reports, meeting presentations or scientific articles can be accessed online through the IDS Web site including :

  • IDS Terms of Reference
  • IDS Annual Reports
  • IDS Governing Board minutes
  • IDS Directory
  • Technical reports
  • Peer-reviewed articles related to the DORIS system
