EUROPEAN GEOSCIENCES UNION (EGU) GENERAL ASSEMBLY 2025 | VIENNA, AUSTRIA | APRIL 27 – MAY 2, 2025
The European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2025, known as EGU25, brought together scientists from across the Earth, planetary, and space science communities in Vienna, Austria, and online from 27 April to 2 May 2025. It is one of the largest geoscience conferences globally, providing a multidisciplinary forum for researchers to present, discuss, and advance scientific knowledge in fields spanning geology, climatology, geodesy, hydrology, oceanography, space science, and more. This hybrid event supported scientific exchange and collaboration across the full spectrum of geoscience disciplines and encouraged broad international participation, with more than 20,900 registered participants attending both in‑person and virtually [1][2].
EGU25 included sessions specifically related to geodesy and the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS). Among these was a poster presentation titled “GGOS IberAtlantic Affiliate: Bringing Geodesy Closer to Society across the Iberian Peninsula and the Atlantic region” (session VPS23, abstract *EGU25‑17154), presented as part of the programme on 1 May 2025.
This poster, authored by Esther Azcue, José Manuel Ferrándiz Leal, and the GGOS IberAtlantic Governing Board, outlined the goals and structure of GGOS IberAtlantic, a regional affiliate of GGOS created to enhance geodetic infrastructure and scientific collaboration across Spain, Portugal, and the wider Atlantic region. The GGOS IberAtlantic initiative focuses on improving the accuracy and reliability of geospatial data by integrating geodetic space techniques, supporting global reference frame maintenance, climate change monitoring, and natural hazard assessment, and promoting cooperation among geodetic institutions while emphasising engagement with young scientists and societal relevance. Presenters also outlined the steps taken to establish the GGOS IberAtlantic group and its future directions and objectives [3]
