News and Activities
GGOS IberAtlantic (GGOS IA) functions as a regional node of GGOS, focusing on geodetic activities across the Iberian Peninsula and the Atlantic region. GGOS IA fosters collaboration among geodetic institutions while promoting scientific research and technological development tailored to the region’s unique geophysical characteristics.

A Modern Network of Geodetic Sensors for the Observation of the Earth
GGOSThe wide-range of signals emitted by changes in the System Earth are not detectable by a single measurement technique. While positioning techniques (VLBI, SLR, GNSS, DORIS) have demonstrated be an efficient tool to determine the kinematics of the Earth’s surface, the detection of mass displacements within the System Earth is only possible with gravimetric methods (satellite and terrestrial gravity surveys). GGOS has the main commitment to implement an integrated global space geodetic network of sufficient capability and geographic coverage to understand better the dynamics of the Earth environment and conditions of global change. High and Consistent Performance through Standardisation
GGOSDifferent geodetic sensors register different System Earth signals. To produce an integral and global picture of this System, all geodetic observing techniques and analysis methods should be brought together consistently. The same standards, conventions, models and parameters have to be used in the data analysis to produce compatible and unambiguous results. Discover more…
Geodetic Space Weather Research
GGOSSpace weather describes physical processes mainly caused by the Sun’s radiation of energy in the magnetosphere, ionosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere. Severe space weather events have strong damaging impacts on modern society. They can for example interrupt the adequate functioning of satellite services including GNSS and communication systems, affect automated navigation devices, change spacecraft orbits, etc. To prevent and mitigate devastating consequences, a better monitoring and understanding of the space weather dynamics is mandatory. Geodesy plays a main role in this research, as modern geodetic methods rely on space-sensors and are able to register the behaviour of signals traveling, in particular, through the ionosphere and thermosphere.
