News and Activities
GGOS IberAtlantic (GGOS IA) functions as a regional node of GGOS, focusing on geodetic activities across the Iberian Peninsula and the Atlantic region. GGOS IA fosters collaboration among geodetic institutions while promoting scientific research and technological development tailored to the region’s unique geophysical characteristics.

UN-GGCE Geodesy Capacity Development Workshop
Other, 📅 Event UpdateThe United Nations Global Geodetic Centre of Excellence (UN-GGCE) invites surveying and geodetic professionals working for, or with, Member State government agencies in Europe to participate in its Geodesy Capacity Development Workshop, in Bonn, Germany. This workshop will assist participants understand how to collaborate with colleagues in government to transition to a modern Geospatial Reference System (GRS).
The Concept Note provides more information on the workshop objectives, provisional agenda, target audience and the application process.
Please note, this workshop is focused on surveying and geodetic professionals working for, or with, Member State government agencies in Europe. Thank you for your attention, and we look forward to your contributions to this important meeting.
New Video: Discover the Importance of Terrestrial Reference Frames
Com1, GGOS, IAG, 🌍 Geodesy NewsThe Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) has released an enlightening 2 minute video showing the critical role of geodetic terrestrial reference frames in our world. This short film illustrates how these reference frames are essential for both science and society, enabling countless innovative, location-based applications. Every time you use your smartphone to navigate, you’re relying on an accurate, internationally recognized terrestrial reference frame made possible by the science of Geodesy.
This video, available on the GGOS YouTube channel, is in English with subtitles in more than 16 languages, making it accessible to a global audience. This video can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/zfqq-0d2txk
This new video complements the highly successful 10-minute long version, which has been available since September 2023. Narrated by native speakers in 12 languages, the long version has been viewed more than 40,000 times and provides a more comprehensive exploration of the importance of terrestrial reference frames. You can watch the full version here.
Both videos were produced by GGOS within its Coordinating Office at the Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying (BEV) in Vienna, Austria. In addition, the short version was produced in collaboration with the United Nations Global Geodetic Center of Excellence (UN-GGCE) to better reach a general audience interested in understanding the benefits of geodesy.
