News and Activities

GGOS IberAtlantic (GGOS IA) functions as a regional node of GGOS, focusing on geodetic activities across the Iberian Peninsula and the Atlantic region. GGOS IA fosters collaboration among geodetic institutions while promoting scientific research and technological development tailored to the region’s unique geophysical characteristics.

AGU2024 – Abstract Submission Open

GGOS, 📅 Event Update
AGU american geophysical union© AGU

We would like to draw your attention to our GGOS session G007 at the AGU2024 “Geodetic Standards for Improved Accurate and Consistent Earth Observation Products from the Global Geodetic Observing System Techniques”, which will be held 9-13 December 2024 in Washington, D.C.

Please consider submitting an abstract to this GGOS session. The deadline for abstract submission is July 31, 2024. GGOS is looking forward to your contribution.

GGOS Session Description:

Ensuring up-to-date geodetic standards is essential for analyzing observational data and delivering accurate and consistent products interoperable in both geodetic and other earth sciences. Several organizations are interested and cooperate on achieving new and improved standards: so, GGOS is developing the upcoming international height reference framework, IAU/IUGG/IAG have resolutions recent and underway, and IERS is updating its 2010 Conventions.

We invite discussions of revisions to standards like status of the update of fundamental constants and models for tides, geopotential and Earth rotation, and topics including but not limited to main geodetic techniques such as VLBI, GNSS, SLR, LLR, DORIS, altimetry, and gravimetry, as well as their co-location in ground and space, infrastructure improvement, or RFI protection. The session also welcomes discussions on geodetic data bases and products, their better exploitation, or meeting societal needs through timely applications to, e.g., geohazards monitoring, geodetic space weather research or artificial intelligence for geodesy.

GGOS Days 2024 – Announcement

GGOS, 📅 Event Update
GGOS Days topical meeting on the atmosphere 2024 - Potsdam Germany

Each year, the GGOS Executive Committee organises the GGOS Days to update the IAG and GGOS communities on recent achievements and current challenges faced by the various colleagues involved in achieving the goals of the GGOS Strategic Plan. On this occasion, thanks to the kind invitation of the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, the GGOS Days 2024 will be held as a hybrid meeting at the Wissenschaftsetage im Bildungsforum in Potsdam, Germany, on 10-11 October, see

Event website: www.ggos.org/event/ggos-days-2024/

The GGOS Days 2024 meeting is open to everyone and will take place in person and online. Please register at https://ggos.org/event/ggos-days-2024/#registration.

The GGOS Days 2024 meeting will cover:

  • Updates on global geodetic infrastructure
  • Status of novel satellite missions relevant to Geodesy
  • Optimisation of geodetic infrastructure
  • Updates from the IAG Services
  • Standardisation, integration, and optimisation of geodetic products
  • Essential Geodetic Variables
  • Review of requirements and standards for geodetic products
  • Management and dissemination of geodetic data and products
  • Networking with external stakeholders
  • Communication and public outreach
  • Enhancement of geodetic collaboration at regional level
  • Advances of the GGOS Focus Areas: Geodesic Space Weather Research, Artificial Intelligence for Geodesy, Geohazards Monitoring

In the three days (7-9 October) before the GGOS Days 2024, the GGOS Topical Meeting on the Atmosphere will be held in the same venue. This meeting will provide an opportunity for all IAG components involved in atmospheric analysis to interact with each other and with colleagues from the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA) to share their results and identify new challenges in this important field. Participants of the GGOS Days 2024 are also welcome to attend the GGOS Topical Meeting, more details at www.ggos.org/event/ggos-topical-meeting-atmosphere/.

GGOS serves as an integrating framework for all components of the International Association of Geodesy, providing a clearinghouse for geodetic expertise and fostering interdisciplinary research. A current challenging topic is the modelling of spatio-temporal variations of the atmosphere (troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, ionosphere/plasmasphere) and the magnetosphere using geodetic and geophysical observations. Several colleagues are making great progress in this field, and therefore, GGOS is convening this meeting to bring together all these colleagues to share common research points and to identify new topics for study. The scope of the meeting also encourages the participation of colleagues from the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy, with the main objective of establishing a multidisciplinary network of scientists to integrate geodetic and geophysical technologies for comprehensive monitoring of the atmosphere and categorise existing and potential new related applications that contribute to the dissemination and societal use of research results in this important field.

The meeting will be held face-to-face from 7 to 9 October 2024 at the Wissenschaftsetage im Bildungsforum in Potsdam, Germany. Attendance is free (no registration fee), but pre-registration is required to ensure room capacity. Participants are invited to submit their papers to the journal Advances in Space Research (ASR), Special Issue: Ionospheric Imaging: Recent Advances and Future Directions. Thanks to the support of IUGG, IAGA and IAG, we will be able to provide some financial support to early career scientists and colleagues from developing countries who wish to present their research at the meeting.
